Miss Pooh Wants to be Green

"Miss Pooh" is in Kindergarden now and just celebrated her 100th day of learning with her classmates. But there is something we're not breaking out the party hats about and that is the strange fact that she has been sick ever since she walked through those doors.

And now we have the added concern of water and airborn pollutants, radioactive ones even we are now learning, due to the huge TVA coal ash spill just 60 miles upriver from us.

It is highly possible that her school has "sick building syndrome" and the good news is that there is a simple cure for this.

President Obama's Stimulus Package includes improving our schools and I am hoping that this will include improving the air quality in them by installing "green walls" in every classroom.

Other names for green walls are living walls, vertical gardens, biowalls and active walls.

There are so many good reasons for wanting this and not one single bad reason.

1. It will pay for itself as green walls are proven to reduce the air conditioning bill and provide needed humidity in the winter.

2. It will teach students about the role plants have in our environment.

3. It improves the quality of the air removing toxins as the air is circulated through the wall.

4. It helps asthma sufferers.

5. Students can concentrate and learn more when they can breathe better.

6. They are feng shui peaceful to look at.

7. Once installed they are easy to maintain.

8. They can also be set up to recycle and reuse greywater.

9. They provide a natural sound barrier.

10. They can even provide the class with a snack!

Celebrate Equal Pay with a Peacock Hat!

I am, without a doubt, loving our new President Obama more and more every day.

Yesterday he signed the Lilli Ledbetter Fair Play Act bringing women the legal right to pursue equal pay. This is a monumental leap for our girls. Woot!!! I'm thrilled for my daughters and for my granddaughters. My heart is singing praises to God for this fantisimo incredibolisicious CHANGE.

I read about it in the New York Times and watched it on the evening news and I want to frame it on my wall.

Don't call me a feminist because I am definitely what the Urban Dictionary calls a "retrosexual" Be sure you read Definition #20 because apparently "retrosexual" means 23 very different things to 23 very different people but I mean this one:

A retrosexual is (in the female case) that woman who eschews the sexual-revolution plank of feminism in favor of more-traditional values. Perhaps even 1950s values (this is not to say she goes as far as the cone-bra). A little burlesque, a little Betty Crocker, the retrosexual woman has new-fangled spunk and old-fashioned values: she does for abstinence and monogamy what Slang Flashcards do for Dover illustrations. She may be, well, Sexless in the City, but only 'cause she chooses to be.

We had a chihuahua. For years and years. She lived to be VERY old. Ancient even. She was so hyper as a puppy that we named her "Anamaniac". Like the cartoon. But it shortened to just "Anna" immediately.

Anna, the maniac, was the "Defender of Sleep". Literally. She couldn't have cared less about my daughter's needs for a proper education. To her it was never, EVER, time for the girls to get up for school. She was going to let them sleep on for as long as they wanted to and she was willing to die even to defend them of their privilege. The truant officer owes me MUCH for braving this vicious 5 pound killer dog day after day all those years to see to it that they always caught the bus for school.

Lucky though for Anna, her male master worked midnights so she could curl up next to another warm body each morning as soon as the kids bed grew cold.

But enough reminiscing over the scars on my arms and ankles...

Rhett, who is married to that strange sister to John Boy, Scarlett and John Boy himself, the mountains one and only eligible bachelor who aims to keep it that way....

*Louise goes to the bushes to look and holds something up*

"Aw it was jest a rabbit Thelma. Quit bein' so durn trigger happy!"

John Boy: "I hired you two MAN HATIN' cousins to protect me from all the other women folk on this mountain, not to shoot up all the varmits! But then again, rabbit stew sounds great for supper!"
